According to the present data, public waterworks in Hungary used to cover about 90% of the drinking-water needs from subsurface water resources, and about 10% from surface waters. Healthy drinking-water is a basic natural need, meanwhile some detrimental, contaminating activities and factors can endanger even subsurface water bases. Based on the recommendation of WHO, possibly subsurface waters shall be used in the public utility water distribution, because these are less sensitive for random contaminations, meanwhile the connecting treatment technologies are more simple and cheap. These above facts were the reasons of the preparation of the Program for Subsurface Water base Protection (1985-1986). Nevertheless, from financial and judiciary reasons, the start of this protection program became possible only in 1995. Since the Governmental Order 123/1997. (VII. 18.) took effect, our company does it’s best efforts to protect the affected water bases, including the ones in Kótaj, Ibrány-Jásztelep, Paszab, Tiszalök, Tiszadob, Demecser, Nyírbogdány, Tiszatelek, Nyírtelek, Tiszadada, Levelek, and Nyírbátor.
